Favorite Milwaukee Workouts

In anticipation of Summer in Milwaukee, I’m going to share my favorite places to get a good workout in. Of course some of these places are open year round but if you’re anything like me you’re probably a bit more active in the warmer months of the year. It’s finally time to get out of hibernation – here’s where you can find me getting my sweat on this summer šŸ™‚

  1. CrossFit 414. In short, CrossFit is constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. Think barbells, kettlebells, dumbbells, gymnastic, and bodyweight movements. Always a great workout and there’s always something to get better at. When the weather is nice we program a lot of running and sometimes do Saturday partner workouts outdoors.
  2. Tosa Pool. Lap swimming outdoors is such a treat and doesn’t even feel like a workout! Plus you can catch some rays after you get your workout in. Oh, and don’t forget about the beer garden on the premises that often has live music. My new Friday night routine!
  3. Bike trails. There are plenty of great biking routes in and around the Milwaukee area and I’m hoping to discover some more this Summer in preparation for my first century ride this Fall. Right now I’m doing lots of ride on theĀ Oak Leaf Trail. Another favorite is theĀ Bugline Trail. I’d also like to explore the Glacial Drumlin State Trail (runs from Milwaukee to Madison).
  4. Spire Fitness. When the weather isn’t ideal or I just want to get a great cycling class in, this is where I’ll be headed. My favorite classes to take here are Rhythm Ride and TRX. They also offer rowing and are constantly adding new types of fitness classes.
  5. Walks. I’ve made it my personal goal to get in more steps on a daily basis and it’s a pretty manageable task in a city like Milwaukee. The Riverwalk, Lakeshore State Park, and Lake Drive are all nice spots for a stroll!

Five Ways to Improve Your Health Today

For my first post, I wanted to give you all five ways to improve your health TODAY. These are simple tips that can be implemented right away.

  1. Drink a glass of water first thing when you get up.
    • I’ve found the easiest way to make this happen is by bringing a glass of water with you to bed. Sure, you might take a couple of sips throughout the night but you should have a good amount left in the morning that you can drink upon waking. After a night of rest, your body wakes up slightly dehydrated so this is a great way to combat that and give your metabolism a boost.
  2. Create a nighttime routine.
    • This is the first step in ensuring you get a good night’s sleep. For me, this means staying off of my phone for a couple of hours leading up to bed, using essential oils, reading, journaling, and meditating (I’ll do a more in-depth post about this another time). Whatever it looks like for you, make sure to be consistent with it.
  3. Sit down for your next meal.
    • This is about being more mindful of your eating behaviors. Try to limit distractions – watching TV, being on your phone, etc. If you focus on the food you’re eating, you’ll be more in tune with satiety signals and you’ll probably end up enjoying the meal more!
  4. Get moving.
    • Whatever that means to you, try to do it for 30 minutes/day. This could be as simple as a half hour walk or trying the new workout class you’ve been interested in.
  5. Start reading food labels.
    • Ideally most of the foods you’re eating won’t have labels (fruits/vegetables) but being aware of the ingredients in any processed foods you’re consuming is a good habit to get into.
